Thai Star Cuisine - 2008

The craziest salad I ever had was at Thai Star Cuisine. It was the Pra Duk Poo - crunchy catfish salad. A large quantity deep fried cat fish flakes (kinda like pop corn chicken...but fish) on a bed of finely julienned carrots, cucumbers, and lettuce with a sweet, vinegar and fish sauce dressing. The texture was pure crunchiness and the vinaigrette dressing made me pucker. Certainly, the most unique and interesting salad dish I've ever tried. Would I eat it again? Yes, I would.

Nipa Hut

22122 Sherman Way Suite 101,
Canoga Park, CA 91303

Cafeteria style lunch or dinner dining, usually lunch. The best variety. If I had to rank the Flip places in the valley it would be: 1. Nipa Hut 2. Island Pacific 3. That other place?

Corrientes

6113 Reseda Blvd,
Tarzana, CA 91335

Got introduced to Argentinian bistec and Malbec at Corrientes on one rainy day while waiting for traffic to die down. The cooking reflects the Italian ancestry of the place. I got a history lesson-the Swiss prefer the mountains in Argentina. I was so entranced by the wine I bought a bottle. Later I discovered they were selling the same vintage at Fresh and Easy-for less!

Roong Fah - 2008

I tried the pad thai noodles at Roong Fah. I did not like it. The scrambled eggs in the pad thai noodles were runny. Either the noodles were not hot enough to cook the scrambled eggs or they failed to cook the scrambled eggs and pad thai in the wok.

I also tried their seafood noodles. It was a mess too. They just didn't have a concept of how to cook seafood with noodles. Its as if they gave up and dumped some black bean sauce and lots of black pepper and said there, eat that.

Drive up farther on Valley Blvd, and go to the Green Papaya.

Tasty Thai Cafe - 2008

I tried the pad thai at Tasty Thai Cafe, it was descent. On another visit I tried their Thai Sausage Salad. My mind was open as to what a thai sausage would be. It turned out thai sausage was the same as chinese sausage. A sweet fatty chewy, hard, rubbery oily sausage. I was expecting something original but it was reversion to a familiar. I was disappointed.

House of Thai BBQ - 2008

While driving home I got stuck in a sig alert. Fortunately, I had bought some beef pad thai from House of Thai BBQ. I thought I was going to enjoy this at home. Nope, just put car in park and ate it right there.

On another visit I had their beef satay. I was disappointed. Their beef satay lacked juiciness, their peanut dipping sauce could not overcome the beef jerkyness to the dish.
